Indian NGO EktaraIndian NGO Ektara: Transforming Marginalized Indian Communities

The Associate Director of Ek Tara, Manjusmita Bagchi and Advisory Board Member, Hrithik Bansal (HBS 2017) will showcase Ek Tara's work and the challenges & opportunities that come with serving the weakest in a marginalized community.

Ek Tara is a Non-Profit based in Kolkata, India that works to empower an urban slum community by educating its girls and creating livelihood opportunities for its women. Join us to learn more about the important work this innovative non-profit is engaged in, and meet like-minded advocates for social justice in the HCSF community.

The population Ek Tara serves is primarily made up of Muslim migrants who work in the local leather industry. The living conditions are very poor with little access to proper sanitation, healthcare and education. Over the years the leather industry has moved out of the city which has affected the community’s economic prospects. The women have borne the brunt with having to deal with domestic abuse, abandonment, and few livelihood opportunities. Ek Tara works with the women and girls of the community who are the most vulnerable in this fragile community.
