940x0HCSF Reading Group - Ralph Ellison's "Invisible Man"

Join the Harvard Club of San Francisco Reading Group to discuss Ralph Ellison's "Invisible Man" at 4:30 pm PT on December 13. Space for this event is limited, and it fills up rapidly.

“I am an invisible man. No, I am not a spook like those who haunted Edgar Allan Poe; nor am I one of your Hollywood-movie ectoplasms. I am a man of substance, of flesh and bone, fiber and liquids—and I might even be said to possess a mind. I am invisible, understand, simply because people refuse to see me.”

Published in 1952, Invisible Man is widely recognized as a milestone in American literature. The nameless narrator of the novel describes growing up in a black community in the South, attending a Negro college, moving to New York and becoming the chief spokesman of the Harlem branch of “the Brotherhood”, and retreating amid violence and confusion to the basement lair of the Invisible Man he imagines himself to be. The protagonist is repeatedly exhorted to look beneath the surface of things. Ellison freely acknowledged his debt to European writers from Eliot, Joyce, Dostoevsky. and H.G. Wells, as well as African literary traditions, but uses an astonishing range of African American folk forms in constructing his protagonist's universe.
