October 18th

(Please note, those new to tutoring will have orientation)

The Great San Francisco Personal Statement Weekend is 826 Valencia's biggest tutoring extravaganza of the year, in which they call on everyone in their network to pitch in to support high school senior in the process of applying to college.

This year 826 Valencia is aiming to serve 200 students from SFUSD over the course of the weekend, many of whom will not be able to get this kind of help, which we offer for free, anywhere else. The vast majority of students will be the first in their family to attend college. These students need tutors to listen to their stories and help them translate it to the page in a compelling and authentic way.

826 Valencia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting under-resourced students aged six to eighteen with their creative and expository writing skills. It was founded in 2002 by author Dave Eggers, founder McSweeney's and author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, with educator Nínive Calegari. The iconic Pirate Supply Store on Valencia Street in San Francisco is also 826 Valencia's storefront to the writing center and supports the nonprofit. Read more about the history of the organization or watch Egger's TED Talk on 826 Valencia's impact on the community.
