Armed with only his wits and his cunning, one man recklessly defies the French revolutionaries’ Reign of Terror and rescues scores of innocent men, women, and children from Robespierre’s deadly guillotines. His friends and foes know him only as the Scarlet Pimpernel, after the wildflower he employs as a calling card. When a ruthless French agent, Citizen Chauvelin, conducts an international manhunt to expose and capture the Pimpernel, the quick-thinking master of disguises and ingenious escape artist is pushed to his limits.

In her 1905 novel, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Hungarian-born author Baroness Orczy created the archetypal masked superhero who maintains his anonymity through the day-to-day guise of a wealthy (but unthreatening and ineffectual) fop. In the decades that followed, artists drew inspiration from the SP, most notably with Zorro (Zorrocave, cape, sword, & horse Tornado), Batman (Batcave, Batsuit/cape, Batmobile, &  Robin), and Superman (Fortress of Solitude, cape, & Lois Lane).
