The Promise
Damon Galgut
256 pages
2021

Winner of the 2021 Booker Prize. Critics have been favorably comparing Galgut's stylistic tour-de-force novel to those by Woolf and Faulkner. Through the lens of four sequential funerals, each taking place in a different decade, "The Promise" follows the Swarts, a white Jewish/Afrikaners South African family who live on a farm outside Pretoria. The promise of the title is one the Swarts make – and fail to keep over the years – to give a home and land to the black woman who worked for them her whole life.  With his peculiar and spectrally omniscient narrator, "Galgut is at once very close to his troubled characters and somewhat ironically distant, as if the novel were written in two time signatures, fast and slower. And, miraculously, this narrative distance does not alienate our intimacy but emerges as a different form of knowing." (New Yorker)
