This will be a panel discussion among Jerry Dodson, CEO of Parnassus Investments, a traditional active manager, Howard Aschwald, CFA, CIO of Quantum Capital which runs an alternative hedged strategy, and Ananth Madhavan, PhD, a managing director at BlackRock who serves as the Global Head of Research for ETF and Index Investing. The discussion will be moderated by Dan Beck, CFA, a financial professional at AXA Advisors. The discussion will focus on the issues that individual and institutional investors face in making allocations across different styles of investing.

Bio Panelist 1: Jerome L. Dodson is the Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Parnassus Investments. He is the lead Portfolio Manager of the Parnassus Fund and is the sole Portfolio Manager of the Parnassus Endeavor Fund. Prior to founding Parnassus Investments in 1984, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Continental Savings of America from 1976 to 1982, where he started the "Solar T-Bill" program to finance solar energy installations and also developed innovative programs to finance low and moderate income housing. Mr. Dodson received his bachelor's degree in political science from the University of California, Berkeley and his master's degree in business administration from Harvard Business School.
Bio Panelist 2: Howard Aschwald is the Chief Investment Officer and leads the U.S. and International Large Cap team at Quantum Capital. Prior to co-founding Quantum Capital in 1996, Mr. Aschwald started his investment career in 1983 with Morgan Stanley. He then joined the investment management firm of Stein Roe as a technology analyst and portfolio manager. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis and recently retired as a Captain in the Naval Reserve. Mr. Aschwald has two MBA's from Golden Gate University. He is a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of San Francisco.
Bio Panelist 3: Bio: Ananth Madhavan, PhD, Managing Director, is Global Head of Research for ETF and Index Investing at Blackrock, Inc. He is responsible for advancing thought leadership and innovation for iShares through research and analytics. Dr. Madhavan's service with the firm dates back to 2003, including his years with Barclays Global Investors (BGI), which merged with BlackRock in 2009. At BGI, he was the Global Head of Trading Research and Transitions and CEO of BGI's affiliate broker. He also worked closely with the alpha and trading teams to design and implement trading strategies to capture short horizon market opportunities.
Prior to joining BGI, Dr. Madhavan was a Managing Director of Research at ITG and a member of the firm's management and executive committees. Previously, he was the Charles B. Thorton Professor of Finance at the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California and an Assistant Professor of Finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Madhavan earned a BA degree from the University of Delhi, MA degree from Boston University, and a PhD in economics from Cornell University.
Bio Moderator: Dan Beck is a financial professional at AXA Advisors in the San Francisco office. He has over eight years of financial services experience. Previously, from 2012 to 2015 he managed Beck Investment Partners, a fundamental value investment partnership. Prior finance experience includes work at Parnassus Investments, State Street Bank, and Starwood Capital Group. Before starting his finance career he spent seven years as a Navy officer, including three deployments to the Persian Gulf on a destroyer and cruiser. He is a CFA Charterholder, teaches in the CFA Society of San Francisco review curriculum, and is Series 7 and 66 licensed. Dan holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, an MA in History from the University of Maryland College Park, and a BS (with honors and with distinction) from the United States Naval Academy.
