Author Megha Majumdar ’10 on her Topical Best Seller A Burning
In conversation with Harvard Club President, Upasna Sharma '15
Picked by the Today Show as June’s featured book
One of the most anticipated books of summer by the New York Times, the
Wall Street Journal, Entertainment Weekly, Vogue, O, Elle, The Millions, Lit Hub
Praised by critics as “Riveting” (NY Times), “Masterly” (New Yorker), and “Electrifying” (Booklist), Megha Majumdar’s book couldn’t be more timely in its depiction of events of the moment – power and powerlessness, right-wing nationalism, and marginalized communities. The location is India but the time is the present, and could be here in our own backyards.
“Riveting…This is a novel of our pandemic times, an exploration of precarity in all its forms…Majumdar excels at depicting the workings of power on the powerless… Fate has rarely been so many-faced, so muscular, so mercurial, or so mesmerizing as it is in A Burning.”

Majumdar was born and raised in Kolkata, India. She moved to the United States to attend college at Harvard University, where she was a Traub Scholar, followed by graduate school in social anthropology at Johns Hopkins University. She works as an associate editor at Catapult, and lives in New York City. A Burning is her first book.
Megha Majumdar, who only graduated from the College a decade ago, will talk about the events that inspired the book and her life as a writer. We are fortunate to have this debut novelist on her way to literary prominence as our guest at the Harvard Club.
