Named a Book of the Century by the NYTimes, this series of overlapping fictional stories is rooted in O’Brien’s experience as a 22 year-old infantryman in Vietnam in 1969-70. After brief stints as a Harvard grad student and Washington Post journalist, O’Brien realized he “would be mad not to tell the stories” he heard from fellow soldiers, with “their incredible power to keep people alive, to keep the living alive, and the dead.” “Rendered with an evocative, quiet precision. . . It is as though Thucyidides had descended from grand politique and strategy to calm dissection of the quotidian efforts of war. . .O’Brien gets it right.” –Washington Post
