In honor of Chinese New Year, please join us for a historic 33 year time travel of the People’s Republic of China with Nancy Pickford. Mrs. Pickford will take us on a photographic journey from commune to Cartier, the student protests in Tiananmen Square to the 2008 Beijing Olympics and Shanghai Expo 2010. This informative lecture will cover first hand personal experiences and observations of China.
BIOGRAPHY:
Nancy Pickford is a 5th generation Californian. She was born and raised in the small valley town of Hanford with a sizeable Chinese and Japanese community which may have been the spark for her life-long interest in China. Over the years she has made a study of China: its people, history, art and culture. As a member of the board of the International Hospitality Center, she was part of a select group invited by the Chinese government to visit the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1977. This visit fueled her interest and after being appointed by then Mayor Dianne Feinstein to the San Francisco-Shanghai Sister City Committee in 1980, her personal involvement increased. In 1983 she was part of a delegation of ten representing the Mayor as guests of the Chinese government. In 1979 she formed her own company - Orient Odysseys - and for 15 years organized and led tours to China including groups from the World Affairs Council, the California Academy of Sciences and the University of California Alumni Association.
Among Nancy’s many other community involvements have been President of the International Hospitality Center, former Trustee of the World Affairs Council of Northern California, past Chairman of the Docent Council, California Academy of Sciences, former board member of the Society for Asian Art. She is a longstanding member of the National Committee on US- China Relations.
