HCSF Reading Group

Join the Harvard Club of San Francisco Reading Group to discuss “Wide Sargasso Sea” by Jean Rhys at 4:30 pm PT on February 13, 2022. Space for this event is limited.

In her stunning feminist response to Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre, Rhys gives voice to Mr. Rochester’s wife in the attic, a Creole heiress from Jamaica named Antoinette Cosway. This spare, haunting novelette fills in Antoinette’s childhood on an island plantation, her whirlwind courtship with Mr. Rochester, and her subsequent journey to married life in the mother country of England. Colonial economics lurk in the shadows of romantic, candlelit dinners. Lush tropical gardens and sensuality yield to drafty rooms and loneliness. Displacement translates to madness. Named one of Modern Library’s 100 Best Novels.
