Write the Story Only You Can Write
Great reviews, prestigious literary awards, having one's work taught in college classrooms are wonderful pleasures. But the greater pleasure is to read one’s story 20 years after publication and say, “Yes, only I could have written this.”
This pleasure outlasts the others because it gives testimony to our own radically unique existence, to our own, singular perception of the world.
When we do this, we make art, not just stuff. And the world does not need more stuff. The world needs art.
This intense critique workshop is designed to help you get a step closer to the story that will not exist on planet Earth unless you write it. This is not a sentimental idea. Critique will be rigorous and constructive. For a sense of how I think and work please visit www.maryrakow.com.
Please bring 8 copies of your work. Double-spaced, 5-7 pages. Rough or polished, fragments or continuous text, in any form.
