Our speaker, Dr. William (Bill) Strull, MD, completed his premedical studies at Harvard College in 1974 and earned his MD degree from Harvard Medical School in 1978. After a residency in Primary Care/Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), he served as a Primary Care Internist at Kaiser Permanente (KP) San Francisco from 1984 to 2020.

As a resident at UCSF in 1981, Dr. Strull was on the front lines of caring for patients in the early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. As researchers’ understanding of the virus progressed, Dr. Strull and fellow Bay Area clinicians were pioneers in implementing the breakthrough treatments that eventually turned HIV/AIDS into a manageable illness.

At Kaiser, Dr. Strull distinguished himself as a strong practitioner dedicated to preventing diseases through vaccination, cardiovascular and cancer screening, and healthy lifestyle choices. In KP’s patient satisfaction surveys, he often scored at the very top of all primary care physicians in northern California. In addition to his clinical work, he provided leadership at medical center, regional, and national levels in KP in quality improvement, patient safety, research ethics, and many other arenas.

Since his retirement from KP in 2020, he has taken on several part-time roles in medical quality and research. During the pandemic, he joined a national tele-health company to provide care for COVID patients. He is currently serving on a national research ethics committee (aka IRB, or institutional review board), which oversees hundreds of clinical trials in every field of medicine. He also serves as a volunteer HIV and primary care expert for a nonprofit that provides medical care to underserved communities across the country.
