Join Harvard Bay Area alums for an “Angel Island hike or bike”, around beautiful Angel Island. The island is located in the middle of SF Bay, w/ great views of San Francisco and surrounding areas. Angel Island is a California State Park with an interesting history. Learn more on the Angel Island State Park website here.
Hikers/Walkers:
You have many options. Here is an AllTraills link to a ~5 mile <600’ vertical gain hike around the paved Perimeter road… w/ opportunities for side trips to learn more about the island’s history, and take in the wonderful views. This is a relaxed-pace hike, just be sure to return to the ferry terminal in time to catch the 3:20pm departure (or wait until 4:50pm). https://www.alltrails.com/parks/us/california/angel-island-state-park
Bike Rentals:
The “Angel Island Company” web site says rental bikes can be reserved in advance and they offer mountain bikes or ebikes. Per their web site, a mountain bike rents for $64/day or e-bike for $99/day.
What to Bring:
Weather can change quickly on the Bay, so bring layers in case winds pick up. Sunscreen and/or hats are recommended. Bring water and snacks to meet your needs. There are restrooms and water near the ferry terminal, and a Catina near the Ferry Terminal where you can get drinks, snacks and order a sandwich. Lines form quickly when the ferry arrives, so consider that in your schedule.
Note:
Dogs are not allowed (except for service dogs), per the Angel Island Web site.
There are water fountains across the island but should recommend bringing a water bottle that you can refill.
The cell service is good close to the visitor centers but may not be robust on the other side of the island. Therefore, download map in advance for off-line access.

Ferry Schedule & Payment:
If you are leaving from the city, plan to take 10:15am Golden Gate Ferry from the SF Ferry Terminal (gate B) which arrives at 10:45am. The return ferry leaves at 3:20pm & arrives in SF at 3:50pm, so ~4 hours on the island. (Weekend Schedule). There is a 4:50pm departure if needed. The ferry leaves on time, so suggest you get in line ~10-15 minutes before departure.
For Ferry Payments, round-trip tickets can be purchased on-line (recommended) or at the terminal. Roundtrip price is listed as $15.50/ea for paper ticket or $9.75 w/ contactless credit card or Clipper Card/App. Details at the Golden Gate web site (schedule, fares & payment). It is recommended to get to the ferry terminal by at least 10am to ensure you get a seat… lines get long on nice days. Cyclists load their bikes on the lower ferry deck when boarding (the crew will guide you).
If you are leaving from Marin, take the 10:00 a.m. ferry from Tiburon; tickets can be purchased online at https://angelislandferry.com/schedule or at the dock. The Tiburon ferry makes return trips at 3:20, 4:20 and 5:20 pm. We will congregate at the dock on the Angel Island side and wait for the San Francisco ferry to arrive.
Parking Near Ferry Building:
There are many choices, but one option is the Golden Gateway Garage (250 Clay Street San Francisco, 415.956.8002 or 628.219.3906). Their web site shows $10 on Sunday after 7am and <12 hrs.
