The Unbearable Lightness of Being
by Milan Kundera
1984 314 pages
Kundera's beloved philosophical novel explores themes of love, freedom, identity, and the nature of existence. Set against the backdrop of Soviet-occupied Czechoslovakia, the story follows the intertwined lives of four characters: Tomas, a womanizing surgeon; Tereza, his devoted wife; Sabina, his free-spirited lover; and Franz, a professor who is captivated by Sabina. Kundera contrasts the “lightness” of living without deep commitments with the “heaviness” of taking responsibility and seeking meaning.
