Wizard of Oz Mountain Play & Hike
Enjoy this joining MIT/Harvard event: the Wizard of Oz play at the legendary Cushing outdoor amphitheatre and then hike down the mountain afterwards.
The musical version of The Wizard of Oz is playing at the Cushing amphitheater on Mt. Tamalpais. That morning is also the day of the monthly pancake breakfast held at the West Point Inn, about a half hour walk from the amphitheater. After the show we will hike back down to Mill Valley. A shuttle bus for the return is available for non-hikers. You will need to purchase your own tickets for the show and, if desired, for the pancake breakfast. Details below.
8:45 AM meet at Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley. Parking is free. If the lot is full, there is plenty of street parking available along Miller Ave. Catch the shuttle to the amphitheater. Cost is $10, cash only. First buses leave at 9 AM. If that might be too early for you, the buses run frequently until 11:45 AM. Let me know by email and we can try to save some seats.
The performance starts at 1 PM and runs about 2 1/2 hours. There is pre-show entertainment and a festive picnic atmosphere. One can also take some short hikes after staking out one's seat and/or grabbing a pancake breakfast at the West Point Inn. Details below.
After the show we plan to hike a scenic 7 miles downhill to Mill Valley. Many people do. Any ice chests or picnic gear will be brought down to Mill Valley so they won't need to be carried along on the hike. For people that tire during the hike, there will be shuttle buses to Mill Valley from the Mountain Home Inn (roughly the halfway point) leaving for Mill Valley at 5:30, 5:50, and 6:10 PM. For non-hikers one can take a shuttle from the amphitheater to the high school.
There are Porta-Potties at the amphitheater and at a couple of points along the hike. More information is available in the hike description below.
Cell service is good in Mill Valley but marginal at the amphitheater.
