(Aging Well SIG) Mind Over Machine: Human Wisdom and the Illusion of AI
How can we navigate the journey of aging well—for ourselves and those around us? If you are a Harvard/Radcliffe alum & friends, we invite you to join us in this fascinating exploration.
Artificial Intelligence is increasingly permeating aspects of our daily lives. It is easy to believe these "machines" are truly "thinking". What happens when we outsource our intellect to tools that cannot actually reason?
In our August session, we will explore the intersection of AI, ethics, and cognitive resilience through the lens of two fascinating recent studies.
- A 2024 Apple study demonstrating that contemporary AI models do not possess true logic; rather, they rely on advanced pattern matching that easily collapses.
- A 2025 psychological study revealing that offloading our thinking to these digital platforms actively erodes our own memory and cognitive flexibility: The "Memory Paradox"
Join fellow alumni to unpack the ethical implications of relying on artificial mimicry. We will discuss the concept of ""cognitive complementarity"" — how to use modern technology to enhance, rather than replace, the hard-earned wisdom and authentic judgment that become our greatest assets as we age.
