Join fellow alumni for the Harvard Club of San Francisco’s 150th anniversary celebration and presentation of our Distinguished Citizen Award to Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi for a 37-year career of outstanding servant leadership.

There is no one who better represents the spirit of giving back to and lifting up our local community than Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi began her legislative career in 1987, representing San Francisco in the United States Congress. She served as the 52nd Speaker of the House of Representatives: making history in 2007 when she was elected the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House, and making history again in 2019 when she became the first to regain the Speakership in more than six decades.

As Speaker or Democratic Leader, Pelosi served alongside four presidents. She has been described by President Obama as “one of the most effective legislative leaders that this country’s ever seen.” Harvard professor Barbara Kellerman wrote, “Pelosi has become so dominant a figure that history will judge her one of the most impactful American leadersnot just American women leadersever.

Speaker Emerita Pelosi was the architect of generation-defining legislation such as the Affordable Care Act and the American Rescue Plan. As Speaker, she led the Congress in passing historic laws to lower health care costs, rebuild infrastructure, support small businesses, deliver assistance for students and veterans, accelerate America’s transition to a clean energy future, and defend democracy. Pelosi has always championed her beloved hometown of San Francisco: from her early advocacy of solutions for the AIDS crisis, to bringing home federal resources for infrastructure and affordable housing, to crafting legislation that transformed the Presidio from a former military post into a magnificent urban national park.

Speaker Emerita Pelosi comes from a strong family tradition of public service.  Her late father, Thomas D’Alesandro Jr., served as Mayor of Baltimore for twelve years, after representing the city for five terms in Congress.  Her brother, Thomas D’Alesandro III, also served as Mayor of Baltimore. She graduated from Trinity College in Washington, D.C.  She and her husband, Paul Pelosi, a native of San Francisco, have five grown children and ten grandchildren.
