HCSF Reading Group - "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain
On March 14 at 4:30 pm, the Harvard Club of San Francisco will discuss "The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain
"For a hundred years, the argument that this novel is has been identified, reidentified, examined, waged, and advanced. What it cannot be is dismissed. It is classic literature, which is to say it heaves, manifests and lasts." Toni Morrison wrote. Ernest Hemingway famously said that Twain's great rolling river of a novel set the stage for everything that was to come in American literature. Twain's decision to tell the story in the voice of a country boy enabled him to experiment with language in a way that few works of fiction had before. 'Huckleberry Finn" established American language in a way that has been compared to what Dante did for Italian with "The Divine Comedy" and Chaucer for English with "Canterbury Tales." Since being published in 1884, it has been almost continuously censored and banned, yet more than 70% of American schoolchildren read it during high school.
