Tales From The Land Of Pixar: Danielle Feinberg, Pixar's Visual Effects Magician

Come hear Danielle Feinberg, Harvard ’96 (computer science), talk about using art, math, science, and code to bring wonder to the screen. With examples from WALL-E, Coco, and Turning Red, Feinberg will discuss visual storytelling, creative problem-solving, and bringing imagined worlds to life.

Captivated since childhood by using computers to create whole new worlds, Danielle Feinberg she studied computer science at Harvard while also playing varsity softball. She’ll discuss her path to animation and give behind-the-scenes highlights of working on Oscar-winning films for the last 27 years.

Danielle’s first role was on A Bug's Life in an entry level position, and she soon was leading the otherwise all-male department. Feinberg got her first taste of lighting during this time and fell in love with creating the final image for film. She went on to light many of Pixar's films, including Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., the Oscar-winning Finding Nemo and The Incredibles. Another Oscar winner, Wall•E, was Feinberg's first movie directing the lighting in her role as Director of Photography. She went on to oversee the lighting on two more Oscar-winning films, Brave (featuring Pixar’s first film with a girl as the main character) and Coco. For Turning Red, Feinberg took on the role of Visual Effects Supervisor, the first woman in 20 years to hold this position at Pixar. Her TED Talk "Science and Wonder" was named one of the top TED talks of 2016.

Danielle Feinberg is a well-known champion of Girls in STEM and an official candidate for the 2024 Harvard Board of Overseers.
